Admittedly, Ryan Lincoln was more than a little befuddled when he was bypassed on the original list of football players selected for the 17th Cactus Bowl.
After all, Lincoln had cracked Texas A&M-Kingsville’s career receptions record, established himself as one of the better receivers in the Lone Star Conference and in NCAA Division II Super Region 4. A trip to the Division II all-star game would be just reward for a productive senior season with the Javelinas and a consistent four-year career.

Offensive Tackle Trent Perkins is one of six Javelinas who have accepted an invitation to play in the 2011 Cactus Bowl. He's also one of two locals who will take part in the game, as Jimmy Lugo was recently added to the Red Storm's roster.
At 6'4" 320lbs, Perkins has already caught the attention of pro scouts, who commented that he is extremely fast for his size.

Two commit to UIW football - Blake Hurik, San Antonio Express
Incarnate Word picked up two area commits over the holiday break in Brackenridge wide receiver Gabriel Taylor and Clemens tackle Horace Hayes, their respective coaches confirmed.
Taylor was named Express-News All-Area second team after hauling in 42 catches for 1,067 yards and nine TDs this season.
Hayes (6-4, 265) was a three-year starter for the Buffaloes and a second-team all-district selection.

Last year could be described as one of the best ever for Angelo State University athletics.
The women’s track and field team won a national title in 2010. The softball team advanced to the College World Series again.
The baseball, volleyball and women’s soccer teams all picked up postseason victories.
Since the yearly objective is always to reach a higher level, the bar has been set high for all sports in 2011.

Tracy Robinson relishes his years at Incarnate Word.
During his time there, the 6-foot-6 senior forward from Sam Houston has been part of two Heartland Conference championships and earned “Freshman of the Year” honors.
Good times are continuing this season as the Cardinals own an 11-0 record and No. 9 ranking going into tonight's Lone Star Conference South Division opener at Texas A&M-Commerce. Robinson is a big reason for the quick start, averaging 20.5 points and 8.5 rebounds.
However, Robinson still wants to accomplish more.
“I'm happy with the way things are going, but I'm trying to stay humble,” said Robinson, who has four double-doubles this season. “I'm still staying hungry, because I don't feel like I have done anything yet. I'm still trying to prove myself.”

Jenna Harris found the road from Eastland to Stephenville much longer than the 52-mile route one follows along Interstate 20 and Texas 108.
Jenna Simmel was a highly decorated star at Eastland High, the Lady Mavs’ all-time leading scorer and rebounder. She was good enough to get a scholarship offer to Tulsa. Before she ever played for the Golden Hurricanes, she realized it was a bad fit, so she moved closer to home at Abilene Christian University.
Her stay at ACU was one year before she transferred to Tarleton State. Finally feeling at home, she sat out a year as a redshirt transfer and was primed to go last season. Harris never got started. An ACL injury forced her to sit out another season.

The West Texas A&M Lady Buffs didn't rest during the holidays.
They lost to No. 7 Northeastern State five days before Christmas, and in the final three days of last year dropped games to No. 4 Arkansas Tech and No. 1 Delta State.
When asked whether it was the toughest stretch of women's basketball games of their WT careers, coach Krista Gerlich and junior Jamie Simmons had the same emphatic answer: Absolutely.
"It's preparing us for conference, regionals and the Elite Eight," Simmons said. "I think it's really good that we're playing teams like this."

If fans tonight witness the West Texas A&M Buffs shaking hands and introducing themselves to each other before their tip-off at Southeastern Oklahoma State, who could blame them?
In basketball time, 17 days off is an eternity.
Unbeaten West Texas A&M (11-0) will look to shake-off the cobwebs from its lengthy holiday layoff at 8 p.m. today when it meets struggling Southeastern Oklahoma State (1-11) in a Lone Star Conference crossover game in Durant, Okla.
The last time the Buffs played was Dec. 20, winning 65-53 against Northeastern State.
The combination of a forced NCAA layoff between Dec. 21-27 and no scheduled games led to the lengthy down time for WT. WT head coach Rick Cooper, in his 18th season, said he has never dealt with such a lengthy break and has tried a couple of tactics to help his players prepare for tonight's game.
"I can't remember that we have ever had a break this long," Cooper said. "Part of that is the NCAA rule when we couldn't play for seven days. But I am concerned about it. We did try to scrimmage more and play full-court. The only way to tell how we handle it is to see how we respond in these games."

Javelinas hire Allen as volleyball coach - George Vondracek, Corpus Christi Caller Times
Texas A&M-Kingsville has reached into the junior-college ranks to find its 15th volleyball coach in Tanya Allen.
Allen was signed to a two-year contract Wednesday, inheriting a Javelinas program that has endured its share of struggles of late. Yet in three seasons, Allen has led Frank Phillips College to shares of three successive Western Junior College Athletic Conference championships and two berths into the national JC tournament.
“The energy she will bring to our campus is second to none,” A&M-Kingsville athletics director Ken Oliver said. “She has access to the type of athletes we need to move our program forward. She’s consistently won year in and year out, and especially as a player.”
