UIW WINS THRILLER OVER MUSTANGS

It took extra time Saturday night but Incarnate Word got the job done with a double-overtime 90-83 win over visiting Midwestern State in Lone Star Conference South Division action.
The game came with extra garnishes. This was the third time this season that Incarnate Word (14-2; 3-1) had faced a top-25 team in the nation and the Cardinals are now 3-0. In this week’s poll by the coaches association UIW is ninth while Midwestern State (14-4; 2-2) is 23rd.
Then, this was the sixth straight regular-season game between these two rivals that had gone into overtime dating back to 2001. The count is now even at 3-3 and this one is the only double-OT contest. MSU had won the last two and counting this game the last four in San Antonio have been overtime. And, Midwestern State had won the last four games of any sort over the Cardinals including 2009 and 2010 in the South Central regional tournament.
Senior guard Eric Stewart was the hero, and the hero again for the Cardinals. At the end of regulation he made one of two free throws to tie the game at 67 to force the first extra period. And, with the ball in the air, the buzzer sounded at the end of the first overtime but his three-pointer tied it again at 77. In the second extra five minutes he made another three-pointer sandwiched by four free throws.
“We knew when it left his hand,” UIW Coach Ken Burmeister said of Stewart’s tying three-pointer, “it looked good. We hit some big free throws when we needed them. This game was just like the one at Tarleton State last week. It was a game of runs and big shots at critical times.”

EDMOND (Jan. 22) -- Ashley Beckley spearheaded a dominating inside attack that carried streaking Central Oklahoma to an 83-66 Lone Star Conference North Division beat-down of Southeastern Oklahoma Saturday night at Hamilton Field House.
Beckley, Kylie Mayes and Alex Richardson combined for 53 points as the Bronchos constantly found success pounding the ball down low, especially in the final 20 minutes. That trio scored 35 second-half points while making 12-of-18 shots and 11-of-16 free throws and UCO ended up with a 38-14 scoring edge in the paint.
Beckley had perhaps the best overall game of her stellar four-year career, pouring in 26 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field -- after missing five of her first six shots -- and a 12-of-15 effort from the line. She added a career-high nine assists, nine rebounds and five steals, which tied her career best.
Mayes hit her last four shots of the game and scored 12 of her 14 points in the final half and Richardson had nine of her 13 points after halftime. The Bronchos also got 15 points from Britney Morgan.
It was the fifth straight win for UCO, which improved to 11-5 on the year and 4-0 in the North Division. The Savage Storm dropped to 11-5 and 1-3.
"Our post players did a great job and made a lot of shots in the second half," coach Guy Hardaker said. "We did a good job defensively in creating some turnovers and forcing them into some bad shots and beat a really good team."

LSC BASKETBALL
A pair of Lone Star Conference men’s teams and four women’s squads remain unbeaten in divisional play. Central Oklahoma and Tarleton State are both a perfect 4-0 on the men’s side, while UCO, Texas Woman’s, Tarleton and West Texas A&M each boast 4-0 records in the women’s standings. Each of the women’s teams will play each other this week as UCO is at TWU and WTAMU hosts Tarleton on Wednesday. Teams are competing for a berth in the LSC Basketball Championship to be held March 2-6 in Bartlesville, Okla.
The LSC men have a 151-108 overall record so far this season, including a 83-48 mark in the South Division and 68-60 in the North. In league crossover action, the South Division holds a 36-20 record over its North opponents including a flawless 7-0 record by West Texas A&M. In the NCAA South Central Region, the men’s teams are currently 25-12 combined versus Heartland Conference teams and 6-2 against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA).
The LSC women are 132-131 overall, with a 55-74 mark in the South and 77-57 in the North this season. In league crossover play the North has the advantage, 38-26, including a perfect 8-0 mark by Northeastern State over the South teams. The women’s teams are currently 18-22 combined versus Heartland Conference squads and 4-2 against the MIAA in the NCAA South Central Region.

NORTH MEN’S OFFENSIVE
Antoine Branch, Northeastern State University, SR, Guard, Manhattan, NY, Leavenworth HS
Branch led Northeastern State to a 1-1 week as the RiverHawks improved to 8-10 overall and 3-1 in LSC North action. Branch scored a career-high 28 points in NSU’s 82-67 home victory over Southeastern Oklahoma on Jan. 19. He then poured through 20 points in a 77-75 road loss at Texas A&M-Commerce. For the week, Branch connected on 43 percent of his shots and was perfect on nine opportunities at the charity stripe.
NORTH MEN’S DEFENSIVE
Desmond King, Texas A&M University - Commerce, JR, Forward, Alexandria, La., Paris JC
King averaged 7.5 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and 13.5 points per game last week, including a 13 point, seven rebound and two block showing in a 77-75 win over Northeastern State. He added a team-high 14 points and eight boards in the loss to UCO. King also recorded a charge in both contests.
SOUTH MEN’S OFFENSIVE
Corin Henry, Tarleton State University, SR, Guard, Randallstown, Md., New Town HS
Henry led the team in scoring this week, averaging 22.0 points per game as he helped the Texans to wins over No. 9 Incarnate Word (69-66) and at Eastern New Mexico (77-53). Henry scored 26 points in the win over the nationally-ranked Cardinals, shooting .563 from the floor and .778 from the charity stripe while throwing in four rebounds and five assists with a steal. He then had 18 points at ENMU, averaging .500 from the floor and .800 from the arc. He had a steal and an assist on Saturday. The Texan averaged .536 from the floor, .375 from the arc and .786 from the stripe while averaging 3.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game.
SOUTH MEN’S DEFENSIVE
Jacquiese Holcombe, West Texas A&M University, SR, Forward, College Park, Ga., Creekside HS
Holcombe, the Buffs’ leading rebounder this season, led all Buffalo rebounders for the week, averaging 6.5 rpg and helping 23rd-ranked West Texas A&M to LSC South wins over Abilene Christian and at Angelo State. Of his 13 total rebounds, 12 came on the defensive boards, while he also blocked three shots and registered two steals. He was also key in a defensive effort that held ACU and ASU to a combined 34.0 field goal percentage, as well as limiting both the Wildcats and the Rams to fewer than 60 points.
CO-NORTH WOMEN’S OFFENSIVE
Kayla Weaver, Texas Woman’s University, SR, Forward, Aquilla, Texas, Aquilla HS
Weaver averaged 25.0 points and 9.5 rebounds in two wins last week and helped the Pioneers tie their best start in conference play with a 4-0 record. She recorded her third straight double-double with 25 points and 13 rebounds in the win against Southwestern Oklahoma on Wednesday. Weaver then added 25 points and six rebounds in a road win at Cameron on Saturday. She carried the offense in the first half at Cameron by scoring 19 of the team’s 30 points. Weaver is averaging a double-double against conference foes with 21.3 points and 12.0 rebounds this season. She is also ranked first in scoring (21.3 ppg) and rebounding (12.0 rpg) in LSC in conference play.
Ashley Beckley, University of Central Oklahoma, SR, Forward, Turpin, Okla., Turpin HS
Beckley sparked UCO to a pair of big LSC North Division home wins last week, averaging 21.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, 7.0 assists and 3.5 steals while shooting 52.0 percent from the field and 81.0 percent from the free throw line. The senior standout had 17 points, nine rebounds and five assists in an 87-54 defeat of Texas A&M-Commerce and then followed with the best all-around game of her career in an 83-66 win over Southeastern Oklahoma. Beckley came close to a triple-double with 26 points, nine rebounds and a career-high nine assists while also tying a career high with five steals and she scored 14 second-half points as UCO overcame a 34-31 halftime deficit. Beckley’s 12 made free throws (in 15 attempts) were the third-most in school history.
CO-NORTH WOMEN’S DEFENSIVE
Kylie Mayes, University of Central Oklahoma, FR, Forward, Midwest City, Okla., Carl Albert HS
Mayes led UCO’s defensive efforts last week as the Bronchos won a pair of LSC North Division games, holding Texas A&M-Commerce and Southeastern Oklahoma to 120 combined points (60.0/game) and 33.3 percent shooting from the field. The freshman forward averaged 12.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 2.5 blocks in the two games. Mayes had 10 points, seven rebounds (three defensive) and five blocks -- tied for the third-most in school history -- in an 87-54 rout of A&M-C and then had 14 points (12 in the second half), six rebounds (three defensive) and a season-high five steals in an 83-66 win over SOSU.
Jasmine Webb, Northeastern State University, SO, Center, Owasso, Okla., Owasso HS
Webb helped lead the RiverHawks to a 2-0 mark in LSC North action by averaging a double-double (13 points/12 rebounds). She collected a career-high 16 caroms at Texas A&M-Commerce in NSU’s 63-50 win on Jan. 22. For the week, Webb was part of a defensive unit that limited opponents to 40-of-111 shooting (.360), 12-of-37 from behind the arc (.324), while forcing 35 turnovers.
SOUTH WOMEN’S OFFENSIVE
Jamie Simmons, West Texas A&M University, JR, Forward, Houston, Texas, Jones HS
Simmons averaged a double-double on the week, scoring 22.5 points and pulling down 11.5 boards a game, while guiding the Lady Buffs to a 2-0 record and improving to 4-0 in the south division. Simmons recorded new season-highs with 27 points and 15 rebounds in Wednesday’s win over Abilene Christian. She opened the game going just 2-for-6 from the field, then managed to make her next seven attempts. Simmons was then forced to sit-out the majority of the first half due to foul trouble in San Angelo on Saturday, but the junior showed off her adversity scoring all 18 of her points in the second period. Seven of her eight rebounds came in the second half as well. Simmons shot 58 percent from the field and an effective 81 percent from the charity stripe this week. Eight of her 23 rebounds came on the offense side of the court as well.
SOUTH WOMEN’S DEFENSIVE
Kiara Wright, Tarleton State University, FR, Center, Pittsburg, Texas, Pittsburg HS
Wright has continued to dominate the interior defensively all season, and her performances last week were no different. The freshman center out of Pittsburg grabbed 12 defensive rebounds and recorded five steals in the pair of Tarleton wins over the Cardinals and the Zias. Wright averaged 10.5 rebounds and 7.0 points per game for the TexAnns, to go along with her 2.5 steals and 3.0 assists per game. She capped off the week with an outstanding 15-rebound performance against Eastern New Mexico, coming up just one rebound short of her career high of 16, that she set during her first LSC South Defensive Player of the Week performance on Nov. 16.
