LSC Basketball Weekly Release: Ten teams start divisional play perfect - LSC Office
Ten Lone Star Conference teams opened divisional play with victories. On the men’s side, Central Oklahoma, Northeastern State and Texas A&M-Commerce, Incarnate Word, Tarleton State and Eastern New Mexico each won all of their games. Texas Woman’s, UCO, Tarleton and West Texas A&M jumped to the top of the standings with victories on the women’s side. Teams are competing for a spot in the LSC Basketball Championship to be held March 2-6 in Bartlesville, Okla.
The LSC men have a 137-94 overall record so far this season, including a 75-40 mark in the South Division and 62-54 in the North. In league crossover action, the South Division holds a 36-20 record over its North opponents including a flawless 7-0 record by West Texas A&M. In the NCAA South Central Region, the men’s teams are currently 25-12 combined versus Heartland Conference teams and 6-2 against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA).
The LSC women are 116-115 overall, with a 47-66 mark in the South and 69-49 in the North this season. In league crossover play the North has the advantage, 38-26, including a perfect 8-0 mark by Northeastern State over the South teams. The women’s teams are currently 18-22 combined versus Heartland Conference squads and 4-2 against the MIAA in the NCAA South Central Region.

NORTH MEN’S OFFENSIVE
Terance Reaves, Northeastern State University, SO, Guard, Long Beach, Calif., Long Beach Polytechnic
Reaves jump-started Northeastern State’s stagnant offense by coming off the bench to score 33 points in a pair of LSC North wins last week. The sophomore shot 11-of-19 (.579) from the field, including 9-of-15 (.600) from behind the arc. He also was 2-of-3 (.667) at the free throw line. Reaves had 18 in a 75-63 win at Cameron and 15 in a 58-52 victory at home against Southwestern Oklahoma. Prior to the week, NSU was mired in a four-game losing skid.
NORTH MEN’S DEFENSIVE

Friday keyed UCO’s defensive efforts in a pair of LSC North Division wins last week as the No. 15-ranked Bronchos opened their bid for a fourth straight division title. The junior guard averaged 12.5 points and 8.0 rebounds (3.5 defensive) as UCO beat Southwestern Oklahoma 68-59 and Cameron 93-63, with the Bronchos limiting those two teams to 36.3 percent shooting from the field. Friday had 14 points, eight rebounds (five defensive) and one steal against SWOSU and 11 points and eight rebounds (two defensive) against Cameron.
SOUTH MEN’S OFFENSIVE
Shaun Umeh, University of the Incarnate Word, JR, Guard, Houston, Texas, Dulles HS
Umeh filled up the box score in a pair of LSC South Division victories for UIW last week. In the convincing win over West Texas A&M, he led the team in scoring (16), assists (6) and steals (2). He also had four rebounds with no turnovers. At Texas A&M-Kingsville he paced the Cardinals comeback in the final two minutes to prevail. Umeh scored seven points down the stretch, including two shots to claim the lead along with a block and pair of free throws to secure the game.
SOUTH MEN’S DEFENSIVE
Wes Dipprey, Tarleton State University, JR, Forward, Shallowater, Texas, Shallowater HS
Dipprey led the Texans in rebounding twice and scoring once to help Tarleton to a 2-0 start in the LSC South Division. Dipprey recorded the team’s first double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds at Abilene Christian on Tuesday while adding eight boards and a team-high 18 points in the win at home over Angelo State. He also led the team with three steals at ACU and tied for the team lead with three steals against ASU. Eight of his rebounds at ACU were of the defensive variety while four of his boards against ASU were on the defensive end. The Texan also had a block, averaged .588 from the floor and .889 from the charity stripe while averaging 9.0 rebounds and 14.0 points per game.
NORTH WOMEN’S OFFENSIVE
Sabelle Diata, Cameron University, JR, Guard, Dakar, Senegal
Diata led the Aggie women to a 58-55 victory over No. 6 Northeastern State in the opening game of LSC divisional play. Diata recorded 19 points and 14 rebounds against the RiverHawks. Her excellent defense in the paint also forced Northeastern into uncomfortable perimeter shots. For the week, Diata averaged 18 points and 11.5 rebounds per game while continuing to lead the Aggies in points per game (16.3), rebounds per game (8.3) and blocks per game (2). She is shooting at a 45.9 percent clip (106-of-231) to lead all shooters with at least 60 attempts.
NORTH WOMEN’S DEFENSIVE
Kayla Weaver, Texas Woman’s University, SR, Forward, Aquilla, Texas, Aquilla HS
Weaver averaged a double-double with 17.5 points and 14.5 rebounds to help the team to a 2-0 start in the LSC North Division. In the conference opener at Texas A&M-Commerce she led the game with 24 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Weaver then added 11 points and 13 rebounds against Southeastern Oklahoma. She cleared 23 defensive rebounds and helped the team outrebound both opponents including SOSU who was ranked second in the conference in rebounding margin.
SOUTH WOMEN’S OFFENSIVE
Shelby Adamson, Tarleton State University, JR, Guard, Rockwall, Texas, Rockwall HS
Adamson scored a career-high 29 points in the TexAnns’ 10-point victory at Abilene Christian Tuesday before dropping 14 points, dishing out five assists, and recording five steals in Tarleton’s 18-point win over Angelo State Saturday. With her two performances leading the way, the TexAnns were able to start South Division play with a 2-0 record, putting them tied atop the South standings. Averaging 19.2 points per game entering the week, Adamson performed as expected averaging 21.5 points, 4.5 assists and 4.5 rebounds during this past week, while shooting 54.5 percent from the floor, 60.0 percent from behind the arc, and 80.0 percent from the charity stripe.
SOUTH WOMEN’S DEFENSIVE
Victoria Gonzalez, Texas A&M University - Kingsville, SO, Center, Hidalgo, Texas, Hidalgo HS
Gonzalez played a key role in the Javelina defense last week. The team limited their opponents to 34.4 percent shooting as Gonzalez blocked four shots in each game. She also averaged 11.0 rebounds per game, including 7.0 defensive rebounds per game. She posted a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds in at Eastern New Mexico and led the team with nine rebounds against Incarnate Word.
RiverHawks Still in Top 10 - NSU Sports Information
Northeastern State dropped to No. 9 in this week's USA TODAY ESPN DIVISION II TOP 25 COACHES POLL.
The RiverHawks, 12-2 overall, lost their first NCAA Division II game of the year last week at Cameron and fell three spots in the latest rankings.
However, NSU wasn't the only Top 10 institution to suffer a setback last week. The poll features a new No. 1 as Lander (SC) takes over the top spot by virtue of Delta State's loss. Lander remained unbeaten at 17-0 and garnered 26 first-place votes. Arkansas Tech, which began the year as the nation's top team, moved up to No. 2, followed by Clayton State, Delta State and Fort Lewis.
Tarleton State cracked into the poll at No. 25 and is the only other Lone Star Conference institution in the rankings this week.
TexAnns enter Top 25 for first time this season - TSU Sports Information
The Women's Basketball Coaches Association along with USA Today and ESPN announced their Division II Top 25 poll Tuesday and the TexAnns entered the rankings at No. 25.
This marks the first time this season that Tarleton women's basketball has reached the top 25 after starting the year 12-2.
The TexAnns were ranked on multiple occasions last season, which marked the first time in the program's history that Tarleton was ranked in the WBCA Division II Top 25 poll.
Tarleton joins Northeastern State (No. 9, 12-2) as the only Lone Star Conference teams in the Top 25. West Texas A&M was also ranked earlier in the season, but fell after a couple of losses.
Lander University (17-0) out of South Carolina took over the top spot after being ranked No. 2 last week, followed by Arkansas Tech (14-1) and Clayton State (15-0).
The TexAnns will look to build on their No. 25 ranking Wednesday against Incarnate Word at 6 p.m. in Stephenville.

Moving Up - UCO Sports Information
Central Oklahoma moved up two spots in the NABC/Division II Men's Coaches' Poll Tuesday, coming in 13th in the weekly rankings.
The three-time defending Lone Star Conference North Division champion Bronchos are 16-2 on the year and have won six in a row. UCO, 2-0 in the LSC North, puts an 18-game home winning streak on the line Wednesday with an 8 p.m. league contest at Hamilton Field House against Texas A&M-Commerce (11-4, 1-0).
West Liberty (W.Va.) stayed atop the top-25 poll, followed by Bellarmine (Ky.) and Augusta State (Ga.).
The Bronchos are one of three conference teams in the rankings, with Incarnate Word ninth and West Texas A&M No. 23.
UIW CLIMBS BACK UP THE POLL - UIW Sports Information
While its record has not been up and down this year Incarnate Word’s standings in the national coach’s poll certainly have been as the latest voting has the 13-1 Cardinals moving back up.
The poll released today by the National Association of Basketball Coaches has UIW as the ninth ranked team in the nation for Division II. This is the highest Incarnate Word has ever been voted as an NCAA entry, for the second time this season.
Two weeks ago the Cardinals climbed to ninth position. They lost one game and slid to 12th. Now, after two more wins, they are back at ninth. One of those two wins which again elevated the Cardinals was over then-19th, now 21st West Texas A&M.
This coming week will see UIW host Midwestern State on Saturday. This Mustangs this week received votes in the poll.
West Texas A&M 23rd in Latest NABC Basketball Poll - WTAM Sports Information
CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M is ranked 23rd in the NABC (National Association of Basketball Coaches) Division II Coaches’ Poll, as released by the NABC today.
The Buffaloes (13-2), fell from their previous 19th place to 23rd after losing two games this past week. This marks the first season in which the Buffs have been ranked multiple times since the 1997-98 season, when they appeared in the rankings 10 times.
Since joining the Division II ranks, the Buffs have been in the national rankings a total of 32 times, dating back to the 1986-87 season. Their highest ranking was fifth, which they attained most recently on Feb. 16, 1998, while their highest end-of-season ranking was ninth at the conclusion of the 1997-98 season.
In addition to the Buffs, two additional Lone Star Conference teams are among the Top-25, including ninth-ranked Incarnate Word and 13th-ranked Central Oklahoma. Midwestern State fell out of the rankings this week.
The 23rd-ranked Buffaloes continue LSC South play this Wednesday, January 19, when they host Abilene Christian. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. CST at the First United Bank Center. The game may be heard over the Buffalo Sports Network and flagship station KGNC-AM in Amarillo.
Mustangs drop out of NABC Division II Poll, still receiving votes - MSU Sports Information
Midwestern State slipped out of the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches' Division II Poll after splitting a pair of Lone Star Conference South Division contests last week.
The Mustangs (13-3) lost their divisional opener for the second straight season falling at Angelo State 82-81 in overtime then rebounded to beat Abilene Christian 84-62 Saturday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
MSU received two votes to remain one of six teams from the rugged South Central Region to receive mention in the poll.
Fort Hays State (Kan.) (14-2) dropped five spots to No. 8 after suffering a defeat to Missouri Southern (13-1), which improved eight places to No. 14.
Incarnate Word (13-1) bumped ahead three spots to No. 9 and Central Oklahoma (16-2) moved up two places to No. 13.
West Texas A&M (13-2) dropped just two places in the poll despite suffering back-to-back losses to Incarnate Word and Eastern New Mexico last week.
National scoring leader West Liberty (W. Va.) remains the unanimous No. 1 pick of the eight pollsters while Bellarmine maintained its No. 2 ranking followed by Augusta State (Ga.), Southern Indiana and Cal State-Dominguez Hills to round out the top five.
Midwestern State plays host to Eastern New Mexico Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. or 25 minutes following the conclusion of the women's game which begins at 6.

Scott Carey hired as Ravens offensive coordinator - Coffeyville Website
Tarleton State (Texas) offensive coordinator Scott Carey has been hired to fill the same role at Coffeyville Community College. Carey fills the void left when Jon Wiemers resigned from the Red Ravens coaching staff in early January.
Coffeyville head football coach Darian Dulin selected Carey for Coffeyville’s offensive coordinator position because of familiarity with what Carey will bring to the Red Ravens’ staff.
“Scott was the offensive line coach in 2006 and 2007 while I was the defensive coordinator and assistant head coach at Tarleton,” said Dulin. “We developed a great working relationship and friendship. He will be a great addition not only to the football program, but Coffeyville Community College and the city of Coffeyville.”
“Scott brings a wealth of knowledge from coaching at several different four-year schools,” said Dulin. “Coach Carey’s backgrounds are from the air raid offense at Colorado School of Mines which is like Texas Tech’s offense, to the two-back power game similar to Wisconsin and Stanford, and the gun option stuff like Auburn.”
Carey has coached at Tarleton State since the 2006 season where he was first hired as offensive line coach for the Texans. He was then named offensive coordinator at Tarleton State in 2009 and has served in that position the past two seasons.
“He led them to the Division II quarterfinals in 2009, and had one of the best offenses in the Lone Star Conference,” said Dulin.
