There is a silver lining to the exodus of North Division teams from the Lone Star Conference - JerryWorld.

When the Northern schools announced last year they were bolting the LSC, that left a hole in the conference schedule.

As the LSC talked with other conferences about nonconference games, one idea led to another.

What ultimately happened was the first Lone Star Football Festival, a tripleheader consisting of five LSC teams at what is hailed as the "greatest stadium in the world" - Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.

West Texas A&M will be part of the unique tripleheader Sept. 17, taking on Texas A&M-Kingsville. It is a special opportunity for the Buffs.

"I think this is something neat that the kids can talk about, and it will help in recruiting," said WT head coach Don Carthel, who in his seventh season at WT needs 10 wins to pass Joe Kerbel in all-time WT victories (68). "After the season and 10 years from now, the kids and the fans can still talk about it. We're excited about it."

ACU's Jones wins shot put at Texas Tech meet - Abilene Reporter News
After a year-long layoff, Nick Jones wasted little time establishing himself as of the top throwers in college track and field. The Abilene Christian University junior won the shot put at the Texas Tech Open indoor track and field meet Saturday.  Jones' throw of 57 feet, ¼ inch provisionally qualified him for the NCAA Division II indoor championships.  Jones, a two-time national outdoor champion in the discus, redshirted both the indoor and outdoor seasons last year. It was his first meet as a Wildcat since winning the discus at the 2009 outdoor championships.

ACU's Kevin Johnson also provisionally qualified for the indoor championships, turning in a time of 7.72 seconds in finishing sixth in the 55-meter hurdles.  Other notables for the men were Paris Robertson, who took third in the 55 meters (6.50), and Tyler Fleet, who finished fourth in the weight throw (50-4½).


Track & Field Teams Complete Competition at Texas Tech Open
The West Texas A&M indoor track & field teams finalized its first weekend of competition in the Texas Tech Open at the Athletic Training Center in Lubbock, Texas, on Saturday.

Saturday’s competition had both Buff and Lady Buff athletes walk away with four top-five performances and 18 top-10 finishes as well. WT finished the meet with 10 top-five finishes combined throughout the two-day event.

“I am very pleased with how we opened the season this weekend,” WTAMU head track & field coach Darren Flowers said. “I think we made a statement that WT will be a serious competitor within the Lone Star Conference this year. We have a lot more depth than I had originally thought heading into the season and I was pleasantly surprised in how many of our “B” and “C” teams faired in completion.”
