2010 SPORTS YEAR IN REVIEW: Sportswomen of the year - Nathan Wright, San Angelo Standard Times

Following a national runner-up finish at the 2009 NCAA Division II national track and field meet at the LeGrand Sports Complex, there was reason for the Angelo State University women’s track team to be optimistic about 2010.

The Rambelles returned almost all of that team that lost to Lincoln, Mo., by three points in a team race that came down to the meet’s final event.

The beginning of the 2010 season featured a successful showing at the Texas Relays in Austin highlighted by a Division II record-setting performance in the heptathlon by Aisha Adams.

Adams then helped lead the Rambelles to a dominating victory at the Lone Star Conference meet for the second year in a row.

Following that performance, seven Rambelles — Adams, Celethia Byrd, Chrystal Ruiz, Andria Nussey, Kris Crockett, Sara Hooker and Makayla Myers were selected to participate in the national meet. Kimberly Williams and Jayda Spencer were added due to scratches to complete the nine-member contingent in Charlotte, N.C.

What transpired was the most exciting three days in ASU Track and Field history.

Josh Neiswander’s illustrious and record-setting ASU career definitely had its share of ups and downs.

Buf from a redshirt season in 2005 to its conclusion as a sixth-year senior in 2010, it had its share of memorable moments and performances.

And for becoming arguable the best quarterback to come through ASU, Neiswander is this year’s Standard-Times Sportsman of the Year.

His ASU career began with a redshirt year in 2005. He was tutored by quarterback Trey Weishuhn, who helped lead the Rams to the NCAA playoffs.

In 2006, he appeared in five games as the team’s backup before taking over as the starter in 2007. In his first full season at the helm, he passed for 1,901 yards and seven touchdowns.

He was looking forward to his junior season in 2008, but he was injured after an impressive start in the first game of the season against Texas State. He earned a medical redshirt that gave him two more years of eligibility.

He made the most of those two years.

Grant McCasland has only been around for 22 of Midwestern State’s 499 wins at D.L. Ligon Coliseum, but the second-year head coach realizes the significance of what could happen tonight.

“I can do the math — and 500 is a lot of wins. That’s really something special. I don’t know if I will even coach that many games,” said McCasland, who has never lost a game under the Dome.

He gave the MSU fans an assist for all the success.

“Our fans are as good as there are in Division II and as good or better than a lot of the lower level Division I schools,” McCasland said.

The West Texas A&M Lady Buffs are on their worst losing skid in nearly nine years.

The No. 22 Lady Buffs lost Friday to No. 1 Delta State in Cleveland, Miss., 67-60, extending their losing streak to three games - the program's longest drought since February 2002 under former coach Bob Schneider.

The Lady Statesmen, meanwhile, extended their winning streak at Walter Sillers Coliseum to 54 games before 1,325 fans.

WT's three recent losses have come against top-10 teams, including two on the road.

The streak started with a 65-62 loss to No. 7 Northeastern State at the First United Bank Center, followed by a 75-63 loss Wednesday to No. 5 Arkansas Tech.

Lineman steps into the next chapter

One telephone call was all it took to convince Casey O’Connor to move thousands of miles away. To earn a football scholarship, the 2009 Lincoln High School graduate would do about anything.

O’Connor was in the kitchen one morning with his girlfriend, Kelsey Fagan, when he got a call from Sierra College football coach Jeff Tisdel. O’Connor did not mind putting breakfast on hold.

Tisdel called to inform O’Connor that West Texas A&M University was interested in signing the 6-foot-1, 270-pound offensive tackle. O’Connor later had chats with two West Texas A&M coaches. Not only did O’Connor confirm the Division II college’s interest, but he was also offered a scholarship by the Buffaloes. They needed a tackle and liked what they saw of O’Connor on game film.

Once O’Connor caught his breath, he managed to muster enough words to say he would accept it.

“I haven’t signed any papers,” O’Connor said Monday, “but it’s about as set in stone as it can be.”

The letter of intent will be coming, and O’Connor is looking forward to the next chapter of his career.

“When I talked to their coaches, it all sounded so fantastic,” he said. “And it’s Christmas, too.”

Not only will O’Connor have a new address, but he will also have a new position. He will play at right tackle. He started at center and left tackle for the Wolverines before injuring his ankle.

“When I looked up West Texas A&M on YouTube,” he said. “every running play I saw was to the right tackle.”
