Despite a Lone Star Conference women's record of 53 points by Texas A&M University-Commerce senior guard Britney Jordan, the Abilene Christian Wildcats were able to play spoiler with a 104-95 victory in LSC crossover play on Saturday afternoon at Moody Coliseum.
"I kept seeing gaps," said Jordan (pictured; courtesy of Gerald Ewing) of her scoring opportunities. "It also helps when you've got good teammates saying keep going, keep shooting."
The All-American candidate listened and finished 21-of-39 from the floor, with each basket coming from inside the 3-point line, and added six rebounds, six assists and three steals. The 53 points top the old LSC record of 49 set by Tarleton State's Rachelle Bowen in 1996, and breaks the old program record of 43 set Meshell Graham and Jordan. The 21 field goals and 39 attempts are also LSC and A&M-Commerce records.
After the Lions opened the game on a 6-2 run, the Wildcats responded with a 13-2 spurt and never looked back. A&M-Commerce closed to within two at the break, but ACU scored 10 straight to start the second to grab a 53-41 lead at the 18:04 mark.
Genevieve Campbell drained two 3-pointers, including one after she was fouled to pull off a four point play, to help the Lions pull within five with 9:51 to go. But the Wildcats answered like they had all day and stretched the lead back to double digits until the final seconds of the contest.
"It was one of those games where we weren't able to pull it off," said Jordan, whose scoring effort also ranks 10th in Division II history. "We've got to have a short memory about today."
