A&M-Commerce names Morriss as new football coach

He played in two Super Bowls as an all-pro center with the Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots.
As a head coach for five seasons at Baylor he was on the opposing sidelines against national powers Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas State.

He was head coach for two seasons at Kentucky, facing more national powers including Louisiana State, Florida, Tennessee and Georgia.

There’s nothing in the Lone Star Conference that should shake up Texas A&M University-Commerce’s new head football coach Guy Morriss. He’s definitely been through some football wars.

The opportunity for Guy Morriss to be a head coach again presented itself when Texas A&M-Commerce called.

Morriss, 57, was introduced Wednesday as the head football coach at A&M-Commerce. Terms of the contract were not released but A&M-Commerce athletic director Carlton Cooper said it was a multi-year deal.

"The quality of football is good and, as a coach, you really appreciate that," Morriss said. "And it afforded me a chance to be the head coach. I think this can be a heck of a program and I'm here to help Mr. Cooper grow it into a heck of a program."

There are some things Morriss will have to get used to, such as the school's name. His dad, Ross Morriss, graduated from the school in 1956 when it was called East Texas State, and Guy Morriss had to stop himself from saying "East Texas State" during the press conference.

"If it's Commerce, that's fine," Morriss said. "I'm happy to be here."

UCO lineman pulling double duty this week
Central Oklahoma offensive tackle Dustin Finn will be packing away the frequent flier miles this week. The 6-foot-3, 285-pounder is pulling double duty for the Bronchos, competing for UCO's wrestling team as well as participating in Friday night's Valero Cactus Bowl at Javelina Stadium.

Last Saturday, Finn wrestled in one of UCO's four dual meets at the Lone Star Duals in Grand Prairie before boarding a plane for Corpus Christi en route to checking in for the annual Division II football game. Following the conclusion of the bowl game, Finn will begin a long day of travel starting early Saturday during which he will travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa, to compete in the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division II National Duals.

West Texas A&M lost its focus Wednesday night. And it lost a basketball game to Adams State.

Cruising along with an 18-point halftime lead against a team riding an eight-game losing streak, WT blew this one in a big way, appearing in the second half to be as far away mentally from Canyon as possible.

Lady Buffs hit road for crossover games
West Texas A&M's Lady Buffs will conclude Lone Star Conference crossover play with road games at Texas Woman's University tonight and Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday.

The No. 6 Lady Buffs will be looking to take plenty of momentum into LSC South Division play, which begins for them Jan. 17 at home against Abilene Christian.

ACU adds ex-CHS standout
ACU head baseball coach Britt Bonneau announced Wednesday that former Abilene Cooper High School standout Chris Hall has transferred to ACU from Texas Tech and will be eligible to play for the Wildcats this spring.

Hall is scheduled to be the Wildcats’ starting second baseman, giving ACU one of the top middle-infield duos in the nation with Hall at second base and junior Willie Uechi at shortstop. Uechi has started 121 straight games for the Wildcats since arriving as a freshman in 2007, while Hall started 95 of 110 possible games at Texas Tech in 2007 and 2008.

Baseball Ranked in Preseason Poll
The Angelo State baseball team received recognition by Collegiate Baseball Magazine with a No. 18-ranking in the magazine's NCAA Division II preseason baseball poll released Dec. 23, 2008.

The Rams, coming off a 39-19 record and third straight postseason appearance in 2008, received 360 points and are one of only two teams from the Lone Star Conference to appear in the poll voted on by D-II head coaches. Abilene Christian received 490 points and comes in with a No. 11-ranking.
