LSC Roundup 1-29

ASU bounces WT
Maybe the NCAA Division II regional committee knows what they are talking about after all.

Early Wednesday that committee opened eyes by ranking Angelo State fourth in the South Central region, four spots ahead of West Texas A&M.

Angelo State's hot-shot senior guard Lionel Brown made the NCAA look Einstein-like by Wednesday night.

Lady Buffs blast Angelo St.
The last thing West Texas A&M Lady Buffs head coach Krista Gerlich expected was a blowout win against longtime rival Angel State.

But thanks to a dominating first-half performance and an equally good start to the second half, that's exactly what happened.

In front of a crowd of 1,052 on Wednesday night at the First United Bank Center, the No. 13 Lady Buffs dismantled the Rambelles, 72-45, to remain atop the Lone Star Conference South Division standings.

''Angelo State came into the game struggling and I'd say they still are,'' said Gerlich.

Javelinas use big second half to zap Zias 73-66
Texas A&M-Kingsville women’s basketball coach Scott Hyland says the Javelinas are a second-half team.

They demonstrated that Wednesday night, shooting 68 percent from the floor in the final 20 minutes to hand Eastern New Mexico University a 73-66 Lone Star Conference South Division loss at Greyhound Arena.

Hounds drop sixth straight
The Eastern New Mexico University Greyhounds (4-15, 0-4) hung around until the final two minutes but couldn’t drop the hammer on their first conference win Wednesday, falling 70-60 to Texas A&M-Kingsville (13-6, 3-1).

“I think ENMU came to play tonight,” said Javelina coach Pete Peterson. “I’ve been in the same position Shawn (Scanlan) was in tonight, trying to get your first conference win and its tough, especially in the Lonestar Conference. I thought his team did well.”

MSU not one of top 10 teams in South Central Region
Even though the Midwestern State Mustangs are one of the hottest teams in the region, they were not ranked among the top 10 teams in the initial NCAA South Central Regional rankings released on Wednesday.

The Mustangs have won 11 of their last 12 games after a slow start and currently stand with a 14-5 season record — 11-5 in the region — and are tied for second in the Lone Star Conference South with a 3-1 mark.
