LSC Roundup 1-9

Cactus Bowl News
Buffs get chance to showcase skills in all-star contest
On the long drive to Kingsville, former West Texas A&M players Keith Null and Charly Martin discussed having a homefield advantage.

When the West team takes on the East in tonight's Valero Cactus Bowl, Null will be one of two quarterbacks and Martin a member of the West receiving corps that includes three other former Lone Star Conference standouts. Also on their team is former WT linebacker Jared Brock, while Buffs guard Devario Dorsey was called on late to replenish a depleted East offensive line.

Two Javs trying to catch eye of scouts
Judging from the attention scouts have been giving to the two Texas A&M-Kingsville representatives in this year's Valero Cactus Bowl, the professionals have been aware for some time of the potential of safety Jabir Perkins.

Those same scouts are looking to see what wide receiver Jareko Taylor can come up with in the 15th installment of the NCAA Division II all-star football game.

Jeff Ray is a gentleman coach.

Anybody who thinks differently just doesn’t know the guy.

So when he put his leading scorer back into the game with three minutes to play and Midwestern State leading East Central by 35 last Monday night, he was not trying to run the score up on anybody.

Defense paves way as Mustangs rout Cameron
LAWTON, Okla. — Before Thursday afternoon’s tip-off at Aggie Gym, this question was tossed at Midwestern State coach Jeff Ray.

If you were granted one wish for what you would like to see your basketball team get better at, what would it be?

“Defense,” Ray quickly answered. “It’s always defense to me. When you play good defense, you always have a chance to win.”

Football News
ACU OL named best in D-II
Sam Collins is a pretty pragmatic guy. Instead of holding on to any hopes of playing in the NFL after his senior year at Abilene Christian University this past season, the 6-foot, 270-pound Collins is returning to ACU to focus on his degree this semester. The Denton native believes his size keeps the NFL scouts away.

"I think it's a great honor to even be mentioned with a great football player like Gene Upshaw," Collins said. "I just think it's a great honor, and I feel blessed to have been around the coaches and players at ACU."

Upshaw was an offensive lineman at Texas A&M-Kingsville before becoming a six-time All-Pro during his 16-year career with the Oakland Raiders. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1987, his first year of eligibility, and served as the NFL Players Association's executive director from 1983 until his death in 2008.

"In Sam's case, it's a testimony to his consistency and endurance," ACU coach Chris Thomsen said. "There's other DII linemen who are in the all-star games and who will play in the pros and maybe have more of the measureables that the NFL looks for and all that ... When you look at the whole picture, that's why he's the Gene Upshaw Award winner."
