LSC Roundup 9-21

Rewarded for years of nurturing
What do legendary NFL coaches Don Shula and Tony Dungy, and NBA championship coaches Gregg Popovich and Phil Jackson have in common? Each has a career winning percentage lower than that of West Texas A&M soccer coach Butch Lauffer.

Lauffer is in his 19th season as head coach of the WT men's and women's soccer programs. He started the programs and collected a milestone last Sunday he never imagined would arrive. Lauffer earned his 400th career coaching victory when the Lady Buffs defeated Texas-Permian Basin, 3-1. The Buffs defeated UTPB, 7-1, later in the day.

The 48-year-old since has added a scoreless tie against rival Midwestern State, giving him a 401-162-35 career college coaching record (.712 winning percentage) - all at WT.

"It's been fun," Lauffer said. "In some ways it kind of validates what you've been trying to do and the way you've been trying to play."

No. 12 Mustangs pick up 5-0 shutout
Much work remains to be accomplished for 12th-ranked Midwestern State. The Mustangs might have started realizing their potential Sunday afternoon. Nick Auditore and Bryan Sajjadi netted two goals each to lead MSU to a 5-0 Lone Star Conference win over Eastern New Mexico at the MSU Soccer Field.

“They played a drop-back defense against us and we were able to throw a lot of numbers forward and finally finished,” MSU coach Doug Elder said. “All of our strikers played very well today.”
