JAKLEWICZ: Coaches' mistakes shouldn't cost ACU players
The kitchen’s on fire but firemen are hosing down the entire house. And the garage, the front and back yards and even the neighbor’s pooch.

That’s my interpretation of penalties given Abilene Christian University football by the NCAA.
Yeah, yeah, it’s fun to bash the NCAA. Collegiate athletics’ big brother.

But this is why we do it.

Plain and simple, ACU violated NCAA rules. Wildcats football coaches apparently helped two “highly prized recruits” to enroll in and take correspondence courses using computers in ACU athletic offices and even getting the coursework in the mail.

Can’t do that.

No one wearing purple and black disputes that.

But does the punishment fit the crime?

McCarty says ECU will improve
ADA — Two days after watching his young team experience the kind of season-opening meltdown that is becoming something of a tradition for East Central University football, coach Tim McCarty was both an optimist and a philosopher Saturday morning as he discussed what went wrong Thursday night — pretty much everything in a 48-0 loss at Nebraska-Omaha — and the direction he expects the Tigers to go from here.

“We’re going forward,” McCarty said flatly. “This team is going to get better during the season. It’s part of the process as you build a program. We live in a culture that wants instant gratification, and there isn’t any instant gratification.”

Even McCarty the optimist had to admit there is really nowhere to go but up after ECU was manhandled in every phase of the game by a Maverick squad coming off a 7-4 season and an eighth trip to the NCAA Division II playoffs in 15 years but picked to finish no higher than sixth in the tough Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletic Association this fall after suffering wholesale graduation losses.

Javelinas volleyball looking to stay hot
KINGSVILLE — Off to its best start in program history, Texas A&M-Kingsville opens its home volleyball season at 7 tonight against St. Mary’s at the Steinke Physical Education Center. The Javelinas swept four matches at last weekend’s Carson-Newman tournament last weekend in Jefferson City, Tenn. A&M-Kingsville didn’t drop a set in beating Davis & Elkins (W. Va.), Charleston (W. Va.), Glenville (W. Va.) State and host Carson-Newman.
