Teams already chasing Super Region rankings
While there are still a few weeks before the Super Region Four rankings come out in early October, the teams in the Lone Star Conference, the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association and the Great Northwest Athletic Conference have already started lobbying for position.
Abilene Christian is 3-0 and No. 2 in the national polls thanks to their win over Northwest Missouri in the opener. But needing overtime to beat Texas A&M-Commerce can’t have helped a lot.
The Wildcats will face high-scoring Southeastern Oklahoma and Eastern New Mexico the next two weeks. They could have their hands full trying to match the Savage Storm and Greyhounds on the scoreboard.
Llano punter Hopf gives TSU a leg up
STEPHENVILLE — Kyle Hopf cringes each time he hears it. First there is the beautiful sound of the punter’s foot meeting the football and then, almost instantaneously, there’s the awful thud of the football being blocked by an onrushing opponent.
“I hear it once in a while in practice,” Hopf said. “It’s not a good sound.”
Hopf, a senior from Llano, is in his third season as Tarleton State’s punter. He is thankful he has never heard the thud of one of his punts being blocked back into his face during a game.
“Knock on wood,” said Hopf, who tries to get his punts off in no more than 2 1/2 steps. “I’ve seen a couple of guys in my peripheral vision come pretty close.”
ACU's Carpenter wins Coody golf tournament
Abilene Christian University’s Adam Carpenter, playing in his first collegiate golf tournament, beat two other players in a playoff to win the individual medalist title at the Charles Coody West Texas Intercollegiate tournament Tuesday at Diamondback Golf Club. The freshman fired back-to-back rounds of 2-under-par 69 for a 138 total, finishing in a three-way tie for first with Chad Bryant of Midwestern State and Drew Koonce of Texas Wesleyan.
WT men's golf team finishes 14th in tourney
In the debut of men's golf coach Brad Borden, West Texas A&M finished in 14th place on Tuesday at the Charles Coody West Texas Intercollegiate at Diamondback Golf Club in Abilene. The Buffs had a two-day total of 597 (299-298). Newman University, located in Wichita, Kan., won the tournament championship at 570. Leading the Buffs was Colin Cruz, who shot a two-round score of 143 to tie for 17th.
HSU's patience pays off in 2 OT win over ACU in women's soccer
In a match that took nearly 108 minutes to complete, a Carlyn Powers header with 2:23 remaining in the second overtime period gave Hardin-Simmons a 2-1 win Tuesday over Abilene Christian.
MSU women surge to highest-ever ranking/Men bounce up two spots
Midwestern State surged seven spots to No. 14 in the latest NSCAA/adidas national poll. The ranking is the highest in MSU program history after the Mustangs matched the previous high-water mark of No. 21 last week. Midwestern previous reached the 21st spot at the close of the 1998 season. The Mustangs matched the best start in program history at 3-0-1.

LSC Weekly Volleyball Release
Conference play starts this week
After three weeks of non-conference play Lone Star Conference action begins this week. Thursday’s schedule includes a rematch of last year’s league championship game as Abilene Christian plays at West Texas A&M. The Lady Buffs won their third straight and 14th overall LSC title with a five-set win over ACU in 2008.
Texas A&M-Commerce, WTAMU and ACU each were unbeaten in matches played last week.

OFFENSIVE
Melissa Harper, West Texas A&M, Sr., MB, Peoria, Ariz./Peoria
Harper continued her impressive play last week at the Western Washington Invitational as she helped the Lady Buffs to a 4-0 tournament outing. On Sept. 11, she registered 23 kills against Central Washington for a new career high and nearly beat it that same day as she tallied 22 kills against Western Oregon. She was second among all players in hitting percentage at .459 and fourth on the kills list with 65 total kills. For the week, Harper also registered 10 blocks and led the Lady Buffs in kills and points. For her efforts, she was named as the Western Washington Invitational tournament MVP.
Malyssa Acton, Cameron, So., OH, Murphy, Texas/Plano East HS
Acton helped her team tremendously this past weekend as Cameron traveled to Omaha, Nebraska to participate in the 2009 Maverick Volleyball Classic Tournament hosted by UNO. Acton finished the weekend with an impressive 51 kills. She played a total of 14 sets during the weekend and had an average of 3.64 kills per sets. Acton was attacking on a solid 30.5% killing percentage for the weekend. In addition to her aggressive offensive skills on the volleyball court, Acton also recorded 4 aces for the weekend. In the majority of the matches this season, Acton has finished with double digit kills.
DEFENSIVE
Lauren Flynn, Texas A&M-Commerce, Sr., L, Deer Park, Texas/Deer Park HS
A key part of the Lions’ seven-match winning streak as she started the Lions attack with 7.08 digs per set. She had a season-high 41 to go along with two service aces in the four-set win over Arkansas-Monticello. She also had five assists in the five-set win over Southwest Baptist and two more service aces in the win over Southern Arkansas.
Shawna Hines, Abilene Christian, Jr., MB, Aurora, Colo./Rangeview HS
The reigning Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Week, Hines was just as effective last weekend as she was two weeks ago as she led the Wildcats to four wins at the Dallas Baptist Lady Patriot Invitational. ... Hines had 15 total blocks to go along with 26 kills as she posted 35.5 total points on the weekend. ... In Friday’s two wins over Southern Arkansas and Southwest Baptist, she combined for 11 kills and seven total blocks, while in Saturday’s wins over Arkansas-Monticello and Dallas Baptist she had 15 kills and eight total blocks.
SETTER
Katie Rickwartz, West Texas A&M, Sr., S, Canyon, Texas/Canyon
Rickwartz recorded 205 assists in four matches to average 12.0 assists per set. She led all players in the Western Washington Invitational tournament in assists, both in assist total and assist average. She also contributed 11 kills, three aces, 59 digs, and eight blocks. For her efforts, she was named to the twelve-man all-tournament team. This season, Rickwartz has recorded nine double-double outings with double-digit assists and digs. Last week, she registered a double-double in all four matches of the tournament.
Holly Hicks, East Central, Sr., S, Round Rock, Texas/Round Rock HS (Texas Tech)
Hicks, playing in a 6-2 offense for ECU, posted 110 assists (7.9 per set) to go along with 42 kills as the Lady Tigers went 3-1 at the Tarleton State TexAnn Invitational over the weekend. Hicks had a triple-double (14 kills, 35 assists and 20 digs) in ECU’s tough 3-2 loss to Texas-Permian Basin and had a double-double (14 kills and 27 assists) as the Lady Tigers avenged an earlier season loss by downing Incarnate Word, 3-0. She had a .307 hitting percentage for the week and totaled 45 points as she also had one service ace, one solo block and two block assists. She also had 22 assists in a win over Texas A&M-International and 26 assists in a victory over Oklahoma Panhandle State.
