Women’s Soccer Weekly Recap

The second week of the 2009 season is finished. There was a bit of a change in the conference – A&M Commerce began the weekend ranked 16^th nationally but fell out of the top 25 this week. Midwestern, as a result of their strongest start in years, is ranked #21 this week and WT A&M also received votes in the national poll. Four of the top ten spots in the regional poll were filled by LSC teams (five if you count Incarnate Word, who joins the conference next year).

WT A&M - Tied Central MO 1-1 Friday at Commerce with Jr Kelly Skehan in goal.

Finished the weekend with an 8-0 pounding of A&M International, with freshman Korey Schroeder between the posts. WT received votes in the national poll but didn’t crack the top 25 (yet).

This weekend welcomes 15^th ranked St. Edwards to Canyon for the Lady Buffs strongest opponent yet, Sunday UTPB comes to town, and the Buffs hit the road to Dallas on Tuesday the 15^th for a match with DBU.

A&M-Commerce - Began the weekend ranked 16^th. Central MO avenged a 2008 playoff loss by managing a 1-0 win over the Lions in Commerce. That defeat bounced Commerce out of the national rankings for now. A&M International bore the brunt of an 8-0 shelling on Friday.

The Lions hit the road to Searcy, AR to face Gulf South Conference foe Harding University on Thursday, then return home for a Sunday match against Heartland Conference member St. Mary’s.

Central Oklahoma - MIAA opponent Nebraska-Omaha handed the Broncos a 2-5 loss on Friday in Missouri. Nebraska led 3-0 at half. Sunday Central pushed Truman to a 1-1 2OT tie. Truman scored in the second minute, the Broncos tied it up in the 43^rd.

The second 45 minutes and 2OT’s produced no goals for either team. Through the two weekends Central Oklahoma is without a win, but don’t write them off just yet. Three of their opponents have been ranked nationally in the first two weeks, and all four games have been on the road – their schedule is arguably the toughest of the LSC schools through the first two weekends.

Thursday DBU travels to Edmond for a match, and Sunday Newman (KS) visits. Look for better results from these contests.

Midwestern - Saturday the Mustangs visited New Mexico Highlands, scored two early and finished with a 2-1 win. Midwestern has begun their 2009 campaign with their best start since 1998, and were rewarded with votes in the national poll awarding them the 21^st spot.

Friday the Lady Mustangs travel to Wichita KS to face Newman.

ACU - MIAA’s Southwest Baptist visited Abilene Friday, but the game was abandoned after 10 minutes when thunderstorms rolled through the area. ACU traveled to San Antonio for a Sunday contest with #11 Rollins. The Tars scored in the 12^th minute and ACU rarely threatened, forcing the Cats to settle for a 1-0 loss.

This weekend the Wildcats face another ranked opponent in #5 Incarnate Word Friday. Tuesday cross-town rival HSU visits the ACU pitch and Thursday the Patriots of DBU come to town. ACU has ramped up their schedule in their third year, facing three ranked opponents in two weeks.

Angelo - Hosted the Golden Corral Roundup this past weekend. Defeated Missouri Western 2-1. After Missouri scored in the 11^th minute, Angelo answered in the 12^th and 16^th minutes. Also defeated another MIAA opponent Emporia St by an identical 2-1 score. After a scoreless first half, Emporia scored first before the Rambelles put up two unanswered goals. Brandie DeBacker was awarded the LSC Offensive Player of the Week for her weekend efforts.

Friday the Rambelles travel to Laredo to face A&M International, and Sunday stop in San Antonio for a contest with #5 Incarnate Word.

TWU - Lost to Incarnate Word 2-1 in San Antonio. TWU scored in the 41^st minute, but the Cardinals found the equalizer in the 78^th minute and the match winner 37 seconds later. TWU was out-shot 11-1 in the second half.

This week the Pioneers take on NAIA opponent Texas Wesleyan and Heartland Conference’s St Edwards with both games in Denton. St Edwards enters the game ranked #15.

East Central - The Tigers joined Angelo in the Golden Corral Roundup in San Angelo last weekend against two MIAA opponents, Emporia St and Missouri Western. ECO pushed Emporia to a 2-2 2OT tie. ECO scored first, Emporia scored two, and ECO tied it up in the 82^nd minute, with neither team finding the net in the overtimes.

In their second OT game of the weekend the Tigers lost 3-2 in the 105^th minute to Western, but showed lots of heart in taking two straight games into OT.

Sunday ECO hosts Sooner Athletic Conference opponent Oklahoma City University.

Eastern New Mexico - On Friday the Zia’s took a 2-0 game from Adams St after a two hour weather delay. Sunday ENM lost a heartbreaker in the first OT period to Ft Lewis, 0-1. Two Zia’s were rewarded for their weekend heroics – Michelle Sumner is this weeks Defensive POW and Sierra Cardenas is the LSC Goalkeeper of the Week.

On Thursday ENM travels to Odessa to face Heartland Conference foe UTPB, and Saturday on to Brownwood for a contest with D3 opponent Howard Payne.

Northeastern State - Did not play this past weekend, but this week face SAC’s Northwestern Oklahoma and travels to Arkansas to face Harding (GSC).

Southwestern Oklahoma - On Friday Newman scored in the 7^th minute, but an 11^th minute equalizer allowed SWOSU to produce a 1-1 tie. Tuesday Oklahoma Christian (NAIA) defeated the Bulldogs 3-0 in Edmond.

Southwestern faces three SAC opponents next – Mid America Christian on Friday in Weatherford, traveling to Alva for a Sunday match with Northwestern Oklahoma, and returning home to face Southern Nazarene on Tuesday.
