The first weekend of games is behind us, in several states against several levels of opponents.
Seems to be a lot of games between LSC and MIAA teams. Coaches are experimenting with different lineups, testing freshmen and transfers, trying to see what works before conference games start. Experienced coaches are trying to work athletes into their systems, and first season coaches (SWOSO and ECO) are trying to determine what they have to work with. Here’s what happened last weekend, with a look forward to this weekends games too –
West Texas - Defeated NM Highlands 3-0 at home, and UTPB 2-0 in Odessa. This weekend on the road at Commerce, playing Central MO on Friday and A&M International on Monday. Central MO was ranked 14th last week, before defeats by both ACU and Midwestern.
A&M Commerce - Defeated Mars Hill 5-0 and Tusculum 1-0 on the road, and DBU 4-1 at home. Pretty aggressive early schedule playing three games in five days. Had both the offensive (Devon Herrman) and defensive (Megan Monroe) players of the week. Herrman, a soph transfer from SMU, adds spark to an already potent offense. The Lions return nine starters and were ranked #22 nationally in the pre-season poll. This week, they move up to #16. This weekend they share opponents with WT, playing Central MO and A&M International at home.
Central Oklahoma - Tough first week losing to #6 UIW 1-2 and to #23 St Edwards 0-2 on the road. Playing either of these teams at home would be tough, but scheduling them back to back on the road is a killer. The Bronchos return 8 starters and will be battle-tested when conference play starts. Two more on the road this weekend, Nebraska–Omaha and Truman (ranked 7th last week).
Midwestern - Finished the first week 2-0 at home, defeating St Mary’s 1-0 and #14 Central MO by the same score. Keeper Ashley Meek named co-keeper of the week for her two shutouts. Single game this weekend on the road against NM Highlands.
ACU - Started the 2009 campaign with the third year programs first win over a ranked opponent, defeating #14 Central MO 1-0 in Abilene, then defeating St Mary’s by the same score. Chrissy Lawson named co-keeper of the week for her strong performance.
This weekend brings MIAA’s Southwest Baptist to Abilene Friday, then a trip to San Antonio to face #11 Rollins at UIW on Sunday.
Angelo State - Began 2009 with a pair of losses against ranked opponents in Colorado.
#20 Regis defeated the Rambelles 10-0 on Friday, but Angelo pushed #3 Metro state into 2 OT’s before falling 0-1 on a golden goal finish. This weekend brings two MIAA opponents (Missouri Western and Emporia) to San Angelo for the Golden Corral Invitational.
Northeastern State - Posted a 4-3 OT win against Science and Arts of Oklahoma then lost to Drury 0-2. Yesterday they lost to Northwest Missouri at home 0-2. Off until Sept 11.
Texas Women’s - Lost to DBU 2-4 on Friday then defeated D1 opponent Grambling 1-0 with both games on the road. Single game this weekend on the road against #6 Incarnate Word.
Eastern New Mexico - First weekend was spent in Colorado, first losing to Colorado Christian 0-1, then to ranked Regis 0-3. On the road again this weekend to Durango, Colorado to face Adams State and Fort Lewis College. Fort Lewis is not ranked this week, but did receive votes.
East Central Oklahoma - First year head coach Riley Bailey’s squad defeated Northwestern Oklahoma 6-1. They travel to San Angelo this weekend to take part in the Golden Corral Invitational facing two MIAA opponents, Emporia and Missouri Western.
Southwestern Oklahoma - Lost a pair in Missouri to MIAA opponents, Northwestern Missouri 0-1, and Missouri Western 0-2. One game this weekend in Wichita, Kansas facing Newman. First year coach Mark Persson charged with turning this program around.
