Kingsville clamps down
KINGSVILLE, Texas — East Central University was limited to 144 yards of total offense as Texas A&M-Kingsville piled of 435 yards of offense, behind the passing of Billy Garza, to beat the Tigers 39-7 Saturday night.
Garza was 15-of-23 passing for 202 yards and four touchdowns while Ryan Lincoln caught six passes for 120 yards and a score as the Javelinas improved to 2-0 on the season after stunning fourth-ranked Delta State (Miss.) last week.
The only consolation for ECU (0-2) is that it finally broke its seven quarter scoreless drought on the season as backup quarterback Josh Phillips fired a 21-yard touchdown pass to Alvin Barnett and Corey Dozier added the point-after kick to cut the deficit to 36-7 with 11:32 remaining in the contest.
RGV Capsules: Garza leads way for A&M-Kingsville
Senior quarterback Billy Garza led the Javelinas to an easy win over visiting East Central by passing for more than 200 yards and four touchdowns in 2 1/2 quarters during Saturday’s 39-7 victory at Javelina Stadium.
He quickly and efficiently guided the Hogs to touchdowns on five of the last six possessions he played, hitting four different receivers for scores. The four touchdowns tied his career high. With five touchdown passes already this season, Garza is moving up the career list. He is tied for ninth with Darcy Davis, who threw 28 touchdown passes from 1984-87.
UCO, Ryan Gallimore a good match
EDMOND — Ryan Gallimore enjoyed his time at the University of Wyoming, but in time the Central Oklahoma wide receiver found out there’s no place like home. That thought led the Okmulgee native back to Oklahoma after a year at the school he signed with out of high school.
"My heart wasn’t at Wyoming,” he said. "I enjoyed the coaches and everybody, but I wanted to come back and be closer to my family.”
He investigated his prospects at OU and OSU, but ultimately decided on UCO largely because he knew he could play early. It’s been a good match. Gallimore was a first-team All-LSC pick after catching 51 passes for 617 yards and seven touchdowns as a junior and should be in line for another good season as a senior.
"I’ll never regret the decision,” Gallimore said. "I love this place. We don’t have the kinds of things Division I schools have, but football is football if you really love the game.”
Bronchos back in poll
WACO, Texas — Central Oklahoma re-appeared in the American Football Coaches’ Association (AFCA) NCAA Division II rankings, coming in 24th following last Saturday’s 24-17 road upset of then-No. 13 West Texas A&M.
The Bronchos were 16th in the preseason poll, but fell out in last week’s first ranking of the season following a 42-13 loss to then-No. 7 and now-No. 4 Pittsburg State. UCO got back in the ratings after racking up 486 yards in knocking off the Buffs last Saturday in the Lone Star Conference opener for both teams.
The Bronchos play their third straight ranked opponent on the road this week, going to Kingsville, Texas Saturday to take on No. 11 Texas A&M-Kingsville (2-0).

Russell: Rhodes' release cuts MSU's tie to NFL
When the Buffalo Bills released former Midwestern State running back Dominic Rhodes on Saturday it not only cut one of the Mustangs’ links to the NFL, it also dropped the number of former Lone Star Conference players in the league to nine.
Rhodes’ release was somewhat of a surprise as the Bills coach Dick Jauron had already said he was happy with Fred Jackson and Rhodes to start the season in place of Marshawn Lynch, who has been suspended for the first three games.

Jordan Schilling, Abilene Christian, Jr., OH, Irving, Texas/Coppell HS
Schilling led an impressive ACU 4-0 run through last weekend's ACU Volleyball Classic at Moody Coliseum. ... Schilling led the Wildcats with 74 points and 57 kills in four matches as ACU beat Western State (Colo.), Pittsburg State (Kan.), Western New Mexico and Incarnate Word. ... Schilling hit .317 on the weekend and led the tournament with 15 service aces. ... She was named the MVP of the tournament as ACU was the only team to go unbeaten.
Alaina Sivells, Angelo State, Sr., OH/MB, Marble Falls, Texas/Marble Falls HS
Sivells averaged 4.25 kills per game as the ‘Belles went 2-1 at the ACU Tournament over the weekend. Sivells boasted a .364 attack percentage while adding 0.83 blocks and 0.67 digs per games at the invitational. She recorded 20 kills, one shy of a career high, and hit .318 as ASU battled for a five-game win over Western New Mexico. She added 19 kills in a four-game loss to No. 17 Pittsburg State and had 12 kills in a sweep of Western State. In the three matches, she had 10 total blocks.
DEFENSIVE
Shawna Hines, Abilene Christian, Jr., MB, Aurora, Colo./Rangeview HS
Hines - one of the nation's top defensive players - was at the top of her game last weekend as she helped ACU roll to a 4-0 record at the ACU Volleyball Classic. ... Hines collected 26 total blocks in four matches as ACU knocked off Western State (Colo.), Pittsburg State (Kan.), Western New Mexico and Incarnate Word. ... In ACU's win over Western State on Friday, Hines had 10 kills to go along with six total blocks. ... Later that evening she had nine kills and seven total blocks in the Wildcats' win over Pitt State.
Lauren Bayer, Midwestern State, Jr., MB, San Antonio, Texas/Taft HS
Bayer talled eight solo blocks and finished with 27 total blocks to lead a Midwestern State front row which averaged 2.25 blocks per set in five matches last week. The junior transfer from Hawaii-Hilo averaged 1.35 blocks with 1.60 kills and 0.75 digs per set and added a pair of service aces. Bayer, who led MSU with 51.5 points last week, culminated the week with eight total blocks (two solo, six block assists) after notching six against Drury and five against Southwest Baptist and Northwood.
SETTER
Laura Ellerbrock, Cameron, Sr., S, Arlington, Texas/Lamar HS
The LSC's setter with the second-best assist/set average, Ellerbrock, had her second consecutive outstanding weekend this week. Ellerbrock led the Aggie volleyballers to a 7-1 record with a blistering 12.06 assist/set average for the weekend. CU's only loss came to nationally-ranked Pittsburg State, a match in which Ellerbrock totaled more than 50 assists. Ellerbrock put in two 50+ assist performances this weekend with a unbelievable 64 assists against Lubbock Christian. Her assists seem to be set perfectly as well, as the team is attacking with a solid team hitting percentage of .245.
Ijeoma Moronu, Abilene Christian, Jr., S, Fort Worth, Texas/Paschal HS
Moronu had 154 assists last weekend to lead the ACU Wildcats to a 4-0 record in the ACU Volleyball Classic at Moody Coliseum. ... In ACU's Friday win over Pittsburg State, Moronu had four kills, 13 digs and 53 assists as the Wildcats beat the Gorillas, 3-1. ... Moronu finished the weekend with 15 kills and 42 digs to go along with her 154 assists.
Lady Falcons prey on Rambelles
Off to a 6-1 start heading into Tuesday night’s home matchup with Texas-Permian Basin, the Rambelles have shown glimpses of dominance, and at other times inexperience. Their youth was apparent as they fell to the the Lady Falcons 25-14,18-25,23-25,20-25 before a stunned Junell Center crowd.

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - The best start in program history has propelled Midwestern State to a No. 21 ranking in the latest NSCAA/adidas national poll released Tuesday morning. The Mustangs, who have won their first three matches for just the second time in school history, improved to 3-0 with a win over New Mexico Highlands over the weekend.
