UIW hosts ranked foe
Incarnate Word, in its inaugural season, is hosting a nationally-ranked opponent for the first time. Midwestern State University moved up to No. 24 in the American Football Coaches Association Division II national rankings leading into Saturday’s game at UIW (1-1).
Midwestern State (3-0) blasted Northeastern State, Okla., 52-3 last weekend. Unranked to start the season, the Mustangs have gained a foothold in the AFCA Top 25 by outscoring their three opponents 127-9.
WT names '09 class for shrine
West Texas A&M announced seven inductees Monday into the West Texas A&M University Athletic Hall of Champions. The class of 2009 is David Cole, Debbie Hendricks, James Morton, Shannon Stroud Cavalier, Joe Brooks, Charles Halbert and Dennis Walling. The group will be inducted Oct. 9 at the First United Bank Center during homecoming weekend.
In addition, the Ray and Barbara Bain family will receive the Legacy Award, along with Roger Rountree and Buck's Sporting Goods. The Legacy Award, in its second year, commemorates individuals who have contributed to the WT athletics program through service, goods and other contributions other than on the playing field.

South Division controls crossover play
The South Division won five of the six Lone Star Conference crossover contests last week as Abilene Christian, Midwestern State, Tarleton State and Texas A&M-Kingsville each improved to 3-0 and Angelo State to 2-1. Southeastern Oklahoma took home the lone win for the North.
Six crossover match-ups are on tap for this week. In non-conference play, MSU is at Incarnate Word, which will join the league in 2010.
Players of the Week
NORTH OFFENSIVE
Baylen Laury, Southeastern Oklahoma, Jr., RB, Forney, Texas/Forney HS
Laury rushed for 184 yards and a pair of scores in leading Southeastern to a 49-47 win over Eastern New Mexico, on the road. Laury averaged 8.4 yards per carry, bolstered by his season-long run of 75 yards which gave Southeastern the lead for good midway through the fourth quarter. He also added 71 yards receiving on five catches, and in addition to his long run, he also had the Storm’s long reception of the contest at 42 yards. He is currently the leading rusher in the conference after, bringing his season average up over to 115.7 ypg.
NORTH DEFENSIVE
Cory Whitfield, Texas A&M-Commerce, Sr., LB, Palestine, Texas/Kilgore JC
Led the team with 13 tackles and picked off a pass and returned it 37 yards to tie the score at 7 against No. 2 Abilene Christian. The last A&M-Commerce interception for a touchdown came when Tay Witherspoon intercepted an East Central pass on Sept. 20, 2003. It is his third-straight game with double-digit tackles and the last A&M-Commerce player to record double digit tackles since Andrew Gamboa started last year with three-straight games.
NORTH SPECIAL TEAMS
Jerome Hewitt, Southeastern Oklahoma, Sr., KR, Gainesville, Texas/Gainesville HS
Hewitt set a pair of school records in the kickoff return game en route to helping Southeastern to a 49-47 win on the road against Eastern New Mexico. Hewitt had seven kick returns, breaking the previous SE mark of six, and totalled 201 yards in kick returns, snapping the old school record of 197 yards. He was one return shy of matching the LSC mark for kick returns in a game and just 13 yards away.
SOUTH OFFENSIVE
Josh Neiswander, Angelo State, Jr., QB, Winnsboro, Texas/Winnsboro HS
Neiswander tied an Angelo State record with six touchdown passes as he led the Rams to a 55-10 home win over Southwestern Oklahoma Saturday. Neiswander completed 22-of-26 passes for 311 yards with touchdown tosses of 21, 27, four, six, nine and 66. The 311 yards was the second-most in his career and the 15th best performance in ASU history. Neiswander moved into 10th place on the Rams’ all-time passing list, now with 3,129 yards. On the season, Neiswander has 10 touchdown passes to just one interception for the Rams.
SOUTH DEFENSIVE
Emmanuel Bagley, Midwestern State, Sr., LB, Dallas, Texas/Kimball HS
Bagley had a career-high 13 tackles to lead the nation’s top scoring defense. The senior linebacker had four solo stops and assisted on nine others, was in on a sack and forced a fumble as the Mustangs limited the RiverHawks to 208 yards and 2.8 yards per play in a 52-3 throttling. The Mustangs have not allowed a touchdown in 12 quarters this season as the opposition has managed just three field goals for an average of 3 points a game.
SOUTH SPECIAL TEAMS
Taylor Cannon, Eastern New Mexico, So., PK, Los Lunas, N.M./Los Lunas HS
Cannon tied an NCAA Division II record with six made field goals last week against Southeastern Oklahoma State. He also hit all three PAT attempts to lead the Greyhounds with 21 points scored. He averaged 63.6 yards on 11 kickoffs, with one touchback and none going out of bounds.
Lady Buffs remain No. 7 in national volleyball poll
West Texas A&M remained seventh in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division II poll released Monday. The Lady Buffs (11-2) won four matches in a perfect showing at the Western Washington Invitational last weekend in Bellingham, Wash., where they swept then-No. 24 (tied) Western Washington in the tournament finale Saturday. Western Washington dropped out of the poll.
