LSC Roundup 9-20

ACU cruises past the Savage Storm
The Abilene Christian offense wasn’t exactly overwhelming Saturday night, but it did enough to beat Southeastern Oklahoma State University by a comfortable margin.

Zach Stewart threw two touchdown passes and ran for another as No. 2 ACU rolled past the Savage Storm 33-14 in a Lone Star Conference crossover game at Shotwell Stadium.

Kendrick Johnson returned a punt 72 yards for a touchdown as the defending LSC champions remained unbeaten.

“The defense played really, really well,” ACU coach Chris Thomsen said. “The offense made a step, and then special teams provided a punch for us. It was a good overall win.”

Garza, Javelinas improve to 4-0
KINGSVILLE - The 1-2 punch of Connell Davis and Fred Winborn and the passing arm of Billy Garza of Brownsville was more than enough to lead No. 7 Texas A&M-Kingsville past Lone Star Conference North Division rival Northeastern State 31-14 on Saturday night at Javelina Stadium.

Both Davis and Winborn approached the 100-yard rushing mark, but neither eclipsed the total. Winborn led the team with a season high 94 yards on 15 carries while adding three catches for 43 yards. He found paydirt twice in the game. Davis pounded out 89 yards on just 10 carries and scored once. He also had one catch for 17 yards.

EDMOND, Okla. - Rarely do you ask a player to return to his freshman form, but it worked perfectly for junior quarterback Scott Grantham and No. 19 Tarleton State Saturday night.

Grantham, who tossed 24 touchdowns as a freshman before throwing only 14 to go with 11 interceptions as a sophomore, was at his best Saturday, throwing for three TDs and rushing for another to lead the Texans past Central Oklahoma 35-17 in Lone Star Conference crossover play.

Grantham was 18-32 passing for 310 yards. He overcame two first-half interceptions with his second and third touchdown strikes of the night, then bootlegged out and jogged to the end zone untouched for a one-yard score that gave the Texans a comfortable 28-17 lead with 5:52 left in the fourth.

“We started slow. They have a good team and it’s always tough on the road,” Grantham said. “They were doing some things with their coverages that were a little different than what we saw on film, but we stayed calm and fixed it as we went.”
