LSC Football - Angelo State Preview

2007 Recap
The season started out okay, not great, but okay. At midseason, the Rams found themselves at 2-3, with tough games against Sam Houston and nationally ranked Midwestern State behind them. The second half of the season was a different story, with the Rams being outscored by an average of 39-19 and only playing Texas A&M-Commerce closely. For the season, the Angelo State offense was firmly in the middle of the pack - 8th in scoring, and 7th in rush, passing and total offense. The young defense struggled, finishing 12th in scoring and rushing defense, 10th in pass defense, and last in total defense.

2008 Outlook
Out with the old - OL Matt Owens, OL Josh Hammerquist, Backup QB Jay Immel, LB Daniel Smith, WR Chris Fowler

Welcome Back - Almost everyone. QB Josh Neiswander, RB Daniel Thomas, WRs Drew Peterson and Sam Tindol, TEs Jason Watson and Nate Bayless, OL Jorrie Adams, Joey Faken and Brian Dickey. Five defensive linemen that played extensively last year as freshmen and sophs, six linebackers with 36 or more tackles, and an experienced secondary with eight players with 20 or more tackles.

In with the new - Dwight Pete should contribute to the running game that really suffered when Daniel Thomas was injured. WRs Damien McCradic and Robert Boone look to bolster the receiving corps. Defensively, Calvin Fance should add even more depth to the DL, and Rickey McKinley should help out the secondary.

All Conference Candidates -
QB Josh Neiswander
RB Daniel Thomas
OL Jorrie Adams (All-American Candidate)
OL Brian Dickey
LB Ian Ritchey
LB D'Angelo Waites
CB Quinton Butler
S Michael McCould

Big Games
Week 2 - Texas A&M Commerce - Rams fumbled the ball inside the Lions ten yard line with a minute to play, losing 20-17
Week 4 - East Central - First home game
Week 6 - Eastern New Mexico - it took OT for Rams' sole LSC South win

Best Case Scenario
6-5 Offensive line continues improvement, running game allows Neiswander to continue development without the pressure of carrying team. Young defense improves, keeping ASU in games.

Worst Case Scenario
2-9 Defense does not show noticeable improvement, QB play remains inconsistent, team starts slowly, causing a loss in confidence.

Based on spring training - if we stick with Josh N at QB it will be a long season. He just does not have college caliber arm QB. He is a good athlete and should be moved to a position where he can use that talent more effectively.
