Ada — Third-year coach Kurt Nichols is expecting some new faces and a new attitude to translate into new respect for the East Central University football program this fall. Last week’s Lone Star Conference Football Preseason Media Day showed Nichols that he is in the minority, however.

Coming off a 2-9 campaign in which the Tigers were the only team in the LSC North Division NOT in a tie for first (at 3-2) at season’s end, ECU was picked to finish last in the North again this fall in preseason voting by conference coaches, sports information directors and selected media representatives. But when the 2008 Tigers open preseason practice later this week in preparation for their Aug. 28 opener at Division 1-AA Sam Houston State, Nichols and his staff plan to start laying the foundation for a season that he believes will change the perception of his program throughout the league.

“I don’t think we should be picked last,” Nichols said. “I think they did it because of ECU’s track record (the school has had just one winning season in the past six years). I was really disappointed.
