Potent offense limits punter's work

By Greg Jaklewicz

Remember the TV commercials about the Maytag repairman, the loneliest guy in town because the product was so dependable?

Cort Johnson wants to be like him.

In 2006, Johnson, the punter for West Texas A&M, kicked 47 times in 12 games. In 13 games last year, he punted 41 times.

He's thinking he'll punt even less this fall.
"I could punt 30 times, and as long as we win the national championship, it wouldn't matter," Johnson said. "I'm not worried about individualism."

The good news in that scenario: The Buffs offense is clicking.

The bad news: Johnson again may not meet the qualifying standard of 3.1 punts per game to be listed among national leaders.
