Intense workout

Carthel impressed with WT's first practice

How intense was West Texas A&M's first football practice?

After the more than two-hour workout, coach Don Carthel asked his players to ease up.

"They were fast and played with intensity. I thought they were in full pads," Carthel said.
"I was afraid someone would get hurt."

The three-time defending Lone Star Conference champions began workouts Thursday in preparation for the Aug. 28 season-opener at Mesa State. It was a mix of familiar faces under the maroon helmets and newcomers.

A few blasts from the past also were on the field.

Returning to the Buffs is former linebacker Max Steward, who earned all-LSC honors in 2005, and Bradley Bullitt, who returned an interception for a touchdown against Northeastern State in a 14-10 win in 2006. Also back is defensive lineman and former Palo Duro standout T.J. Nickelberry, who missed the 2007 season with an injury.

As good as that trio was, and can be again, they will have to work hard to get playing time. The Buffs are that deep in talent.

"We have 50 juniors and seniors. That's a tremendous amount of leadership," Carthel said.
