Former Stephenville and SMU quarterback Kelan Luker will not play another position at Tarleton State, coach Sam McElroy said, adding that returning quarterback Scott Grantham "is our starter." Grantham said he and Luker have become close friends. Luker has two years eligibility remaining.

Texas A&M-Commerce signed a three-year deal to play games at the Cotton Bowl the Saturday after the Red River Rivalry between Texas and Oklahoma. The Lions will play East Central Oklahoma this season, Texas A&M-Kingsville in 2009 and an undetermined opponent in 2010.

From the story...
Tarleton State coach Sam McElroy scolded his peers for not picking WT to win the conference.
"All that does is make (Carthel) mad," McElroy said. "I want him to be No. 1.
"I have to go with the guy as at the top. If you win it three times, you're No. 1 until someone knocks you off. I'd like to be that one, and we'll work to make that happen."

Staff Report by Abilene Reporter News

"To me, the results of that preseason poll don't really mean anything," Wildcats head coach Chris Thomsen said in a release issued by the university. "It's a starting point for the season, but that's all. We know we've got a lot of work to do starting next week when our guys report, and we can't get caught up in the preseason poll. All we're thinking about right now is that first game at Northwest Missouri State and getting ready to play that one."

“We still have to produce but it is an honor to be recognized by my peers in the conference,” Broderick Mondy said.

“At first I was surprised to see us next to the bottom in the poll, but we all know that there is nowhere to go but up,” NSU head coach Kenny Evans.
