Cuero native has extensive college experience

From Texas A&M-Kingsville Sports Information

Texas A&M-Kingsville athletics director Scott Gines has selected current McNeese State assistant coach Jason Gonzales as the new head baseball coach at Texas A&M-Kingsville.

Gonzales is a native of Cuero, has 14 years of collegiate coaching experience and also served as head baseball coach at Skidmore-Tynan High School.

“We were seeking an individual who is a tremendous teacher-coach, an experienced recruiter who will be effective in South Texas, and an experienced and even-keeled leader who will consistently position Javelina baseball for conference and post-season championships,” said Gines. “We feel we found that individual in Jason Gonzales. He has the character, competence and coaching pedigree to achieve our objectives.”

“I’m very excited to be joining such a well respected program and university,” said Gonzales. “It’s a great opportunity to be a head collegiate coach for a first time. It’s a dream come true. It’s something I’ve been working towards for quite a while and for it to happen in South Texas is really special. South Texas is a hotbed for recruiting. The players in this area will have a great opportunity to take A&M-Kingsville to the next level. I look forward to hitting the recruiting trail hard in South Texas. The players here are hungry and hard working and that’s the kind of individuals we want in our program.”

Over the past four weeks, 60 candidates from across the country applied for the position and nine candidates were interviewed.
