Tarleton State may have gotten a steal.

Copperas Cove standout Steven Welch, a 6-2, 270-pound defensive tackle, was contacted by several NCAA Division I football programs and even committed to one before signing a national letter of intent to play at D-II Tarleton.

Welch, who has spent the summer in Stephenville working out with the Texans, reminded scouts, coaches and fans why he was once recruited by the likes of Kansas, Houston and Baylor when he helped the North come from behind and top the South, 16-15, in the Texas High School Coaches Association All-Star football game in San Antonio Tuesday. He made his presence known on the first play from scrimmage when he fought off a double-team to bring down University of Texas-bound RB D.J. Monroe of Angleton for no gain. Welch was later involved in two QB pressures, both resulting in interceptions.
