Penn State Transfer To Become A Javelina

Texas A&M University-Kingsville head men’s basketball coach Pete Peterson announced that former Penn State player Schyler King will join the Javelina program this season.

King, a 6-6 forward from El Paso, attended Andress High School. After averaging 16 points and 11 rebounds per game at AHS, he moved on to Tyler Junior College. At TJC, he quickly showed an excellent outside touch making 23-of-44 three-pointers as a freshman. His sophomore season, he led TJC to an 18-12 record while averaging 10.8 points and 3.9 rebounds per game. He made 54 three-pointers on the season and finished the year recording a double-double in eight of the last 12 games. King saw action in 13 games for the Nittany Lions last year.

“We are extremely excited to be getting a player the caliber of Schyler,” said Peterson. “I watched him for two years at TJC and then things didn’t work out for him at Penn State, but we are always happy to get Texas players back so they can showcase their talents.”

King joins a squad that went 16-11 a year ago and tied a school record with the program’s fifth consecutive winning season. “He can be an outstanding rebounder and is a shooter who possesses outstanding range,” said the coach. “He should play inside and outside for us and will create match up problems.”

Texans complete recruiting class with Division I center

STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton head coach Lonn Reisman has announced the final piece of the 2008-09 men’s basketball recruiting puzzle, signing Monquel Pegues to the Texan roster.

Pegues, a 6-10, 260-pound center, will play his last year of eligibility for the Texans this season.

“He fills the last piece of the puzzle for us for this upcoming season, and we are extremely excited to have Monquel on our squad,” Reisman said. “He brings us tremendous size and athleticism that I feel can play at the next level while helping us build a team that has the chance to play for a championship. Monquel has the opportunity to average a double-double for us while being an imposing figure in the lane.”

Pegues will transfer from New Mexico, following fellow Texan Jeffrey Henfield in the trek from Albuquerque, N.M. to Stephenville.
